CHICAGO – Highlighted by a NAIA national qualifying time of 30:47.52 in the 10,000-meter run by freshman Abel Hernandez (Alsip, Ill./Shepard), the Saint Xavier University men's track team had a solid weekend as the squad split to attend two separate meets. The majority of the team went to Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., to take part in the Eagle Twilight Invitational on Friday, April 19. Cougar highlights included senior Nick Pesek (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) finishing sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.60, junior Matt Krakowski (Alsip, Ill./Marist) taking sixth in the 200-meter dash in 23.00 and sophomore Rexford Wiafe (Chicago, Ill./Calumet College/Bloom) finishing fifth in the 800-meter run in 1:56.13. The remainder of the SXU squad traveled to Hillsdale, Mich., to run at the Gina Relays. Junior Janis Pastars (Ogre, Latvia/Cameron University) ran a fine time of 3:58 in the 1500-meter run in addition to Hernandez's performance.
"I am very satisfied with Rex in the 800 as he has taken another step toward qualifying for nationals and looks better by the week," said Saint Xavier University men's track coach Ed McAllister. "Matt showed that he is 95 percent back from an injury and should improve in the coming weeks. Finally, I am running out of adjectives to describe Abel's performances on a weekly basis. He is beyond my expectations for this season and continues to surprise, more by his 'grit' than his actual runs. He will be a name that you will be hearing for a long time."
SXU travels to Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., this Friday and Saturday (May 2-3) to run in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Outdoor Championships. The meet begins Friday at 4 p.m.
