Joliet, Ill. - For the second time in three weeks, Saint Xavier University has swept Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors courtesy of the play of senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) and freshman defender Nikki Gendron (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Boylan). The pair helped keep the Cougars undefeated at 5-0 with a pair of Region VII victories at the St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Tournament over the weekend. In addition, Gendron earned NAIA Region VII Defensive Player of the Week honors for her outstanding play.
SXU, ranked fourth in last week's NAIA poll, notched a 3-1 win over Grand View College (Iowa) on Saturday before blanking host St. Ambrose, 3-0, on Sunday. Coby, Saint Xavier's all-time career leader in points (174), was chosen for the offensive honors for the second time this season after netting the Cougars' game-winning goals in each of the two contests over the weekend. She was also recognized in Week 1 (Aug. 27).
Coby accounted for three of SXU's six goals on the week beginning with her two-goal game against Grand View. She collected her third goal to start the Cougars' scoring on Sunday. Gendron, meanwhile, became the third straight SXU player to earn Defensive Player of the Week recognition in the league. She was a major force on the Cougars' back line, holding the opposition to just one goal in the two-game stretch. Included was Saint Xavier's third shutout in five games in the victory over St. Ambrose.
SXU (5-0 overall) opens up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) this week with a road game on Wednesday, September 12, against Judson College (Ill.). The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.Click here to see the CCAC Players of the Week page
