CHICAGO – Behind a huge performance on the mound by senior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North), the Saint Xavier University baseball team got a pivotal 1-0 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) Sunday afternoon on "Senior Day" at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. With Sunday's win, the Cougars (20-26 overall/14-11 CCAC) now have a one-game lead over the Eagles for second place in the CCAC North Division with two conference games to play. Vachon threw all nine innings and allowed just seven hits and no walks with six strikeouts en route to his third victory (3-5) and first shutout of the season. In addition to Vachon, four other seniors were honored in a pre-game ceremony in outfielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel), outfielder/pitcher Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley), first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) and pitcher Dan Maton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North).
From an offensive standpoint, freshman third baseman Bryan Polak (Alsip, Ill./Marist) was instrumental for SXU going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases and the game's lone run. The Cougars finished the game with nine hits, including doubles by both Klein and Keating. Vachon and RMU sophomore pitcher Kyle Bledsoe had a great duel Sunday with both hurlers throwing complete games. Bledsoe went eight frames and gave up nine hits, one run (earned) and two walks with three strikeouts falling to 6-3 on the year with the loss. The game's deciding run came in the bottom of the second inning when Polak reached on a one-out single through the left side. With two outs in the frame, Polak and freshman catcher Ryan Pellack (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) orchestrated a successful double steal to put SXU up, 1-0.
