Adrian, Mich. – Posting its 27th shutout of the season, the No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team added two more wins to its impressive overall record this season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Siena Heights University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon at Christensen Memorial Field in Adrian, Mich. The Cougars (40-5-1 overall) took the opening game, 6-2, and then notched its stellar 27th shutout of the year with a 4-0 victory in the late affair. Sophomore Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) threw the shutout in the second game moving her season record to 17-3 and allowing just three hits and five walks over seven innings of work with 10 strikeouts.
The Saints scored first in Saturday's first game plating a run in the bottom of the first inning following an infield throwing error by SXU. A RBI on a groundout by junior catcher Megan James
(Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) in the top of the second tied the game, 1-1; but Siena Heights got the lead right back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single. The Cougars answered again in the top of the third with an RBI single to right field by junior first baseman Amanda Hainlen
(Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC/Bloomington) to tie the game again. The top of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game as Saint Xavier scored four runs to pull away for good. Junior left fielder Katie Sears
(Chicago, Ill./Evansville/Mother McAuley) came up with the big hit of the frame, a two-run double to left field. Senior Megan Nonnemacher
(Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) secured the victory (20-2) on the mound for SXU throwing all seven innings and giving up five hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with four strikeouts.
An RBI triple to the gap in right centerfield by James followed by an RBI single by senior right fielder Katie Houlihan
(Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) gave the Cougars an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game two. James added an RBI single to right field to score freshman shortstop Savannah Kinsella
(Munster, Ind./Andrean) in the top of the fourth and extend the lead to 3-0. Sophomore second baseman Kasey Kanaga
(Metamora, Ill./Metamora) hit a single up the middle in the fifth inning to score Sears from second base and drive in the game's final run. Kanaga led the offensive attack in the second game going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. James finished with two hits, a run scored and a pair of RBI.
Saint Xavier (40-5-1 overall/17-2-1 CCAC) wraps up its 2014 regular season slate on Sunday, April 27, with a non-conference doubleheader with Concordia University (Mich.) in Ann Arbor, Mich. The first game of the twin bill starts at 12 p.m. (eastern).
