Softball - Sat, Apr. 26, 2014

Munster, Ind. – Senior right fielder Katie Houlihan (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) and freshman shortstop Savannah Kinsella (Munster, Ind./Andrean) each recorded three hits on the day as No. 9 ranked Saint Xavier University split a non-conference doubleheader with Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) in NAIA softball action Friday afternoon at Community Park in Munster, Ind.  The Cougars (38-5-1 overall) won the first game, 4-2, but struggled to get runners across home plate in the second game and fell 1-0.  Senior Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and sophomore Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) both pitched well for SXU Friday.

In the opening game, Saint Xavier scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning when junior centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) recorded an RBI double to left field and Houlihan drove in another run on a fielder's choice.  The Peregrines answered in the bottom of the frame with a run off an RBI single to make the score, 2-1.  In the top of the third, junior third baseman Sarah Saunders (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) pushed the lead to 3-1 for SXU with an RBI single to left field.  Another RBI single for PUC in the bottom of the fourth made it a one-run game again, 3-2.  The Cougars closed out the game's scoring with a run in the top of the seventh following a throwing error by the Peregrines.  Megan Nonnemacher earned the victory (19-2) on the mound for Saint Xavier throwing all seven innings and allowing eight hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with seven strikeouts.
In the second game, SXU finished with seven total hits, including two hits apiece by Houlihan and Kinsella.  However, the Cougars could not get the timely hit when needed and left eight runners stranded on the base paths.  The difference in the game proved to be a solo homer to centerfield by Purdue-Calumet in the bottom of the second inning.  Nicole Nonnemacher pitched a gem, but had to settle for the loss (16-3).  She threw all six innings and gave up just two hits, one run (earned) and two walks with 13 strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (38-5-1 overall/17-2-1 CCAC) plays four non-conference games in Michigan over the weekend.  SXU heads to Adrian, Mich., on Saturday, April 26, for a 1 p.m. (eastern) doubleheader with Siena Heights University (Mich.).  The Cougars then take on Concordia University (Mich.) in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sunday, April 27, starting at 12 p.m. (eastern).
