CHICAGO – Senior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) racked up three hits on the day, including a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning, to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 5-1 win over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (18-25 overall) racked up 13 hits in the nine-inning affair with a pair of doubles and Klein's home run.  Although played at Ferrell Field, the game was actually treated as a home game for Purdue-Calumet.  Senior right-hander Dan Maton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) got the victory, his first of the season (1-2), in relief of freshman starter Jeremy Dryier (Alsip, Ill./Shepard).  Maton threw four scoreless innings allowing just two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Senior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) also had a nice day at the plate for the Cougars going 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI.  Sophomore shortstop Alec Barnhart (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) posted two hits as well with a double and two runs scored.  Keating kicked off the game's scoring in the top of the third with a RBI double down the left field line.  In the next at-bat, freshman right fielder Bryan Polak (Alsip, Ill./Marist) brought Keating home with a RBI single to left field to put the Cougars up 2-0.  Klein's homer in the top of the fourth made the score, 3-0, and he came up big again in the top of the sixth with a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-0.  After a double by Barnhart with two outs in the top of the eighth, Keating brought the final run home for SXU with a single up the middle.  The Peregrines got a RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to complete the game's scoring.  Dryier went the first three innings Thursday and gave up two hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts.  Freshman right-hander Adrian Luna (Chicago, Ill./Washington) pitched the final two frames and allowed three hits, a run (earned) and a walk with four strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (18-25 overall/12-10 CCAC) kicks off a key three-game conference series with Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Saturday, April 26, at noon at Memorial Field in Bensenville, Ill.  The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday, April 27, with a 1 p.m. game at Ferrell Field.  The five seniors on the 2014 SXU baseball roster will be honored at 12:45 p.m. in a pre-game ceremony for "Senior Day."
