CHICAGO – Former Saint Xavier University kicker/punter Spencer Nolen (Columbia, Tenn./Nevada/UT-Chattanooga/Columbia Central) was recently invited to and participated in Friday's 2014 Chicago Bears' Metropolitan Area Workout at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, Ill. The annual workout was an invitation-only event and allows a NFL team the opportunity to work out "draft eligible players in the metropolitan area of the player's campus or residence" in preparation for the 2014 NFL Draft in May. Nolen performed a number of punting, field goal and kickoff drills during Friday's workout. He earned the invitation after performing well at the Northwestern University Pro Day in March.
"Spencer has worked extremely hard to improve his leg strength and the fact that he can do all three phases of kicking (punting, field goals and kickoffs) makes him more marketable," said SXU football coach Mike Feminis
. "It was a great experience for him to work out with the Bears and hopefully he will gain some interest from a professional team whether it's here, the Canadian Football League or an Arena League team."
Saint Xavier has had a solid history with former kickers getting opportunities to compete for a spot on a NFL team. Former standouts Shane Longest and Tom Lynch both drew interest from NFL scouts following their impressive careers at SXU. Longest was invited to showcase his skills at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and Lynch was invited to a Chicago Bears preseason mini-camp to compete for the kicking position.
