CHICAGO – Junior left fielder Katie Sears (Chicago, Ill./Evansville/Mother McAuley) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning of game one to give the No. 10 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team a thrilling 1-0 victory over William Penn University (Iowa) Friday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago.  The Cougars (33-3 overall/15-1 CCAC) carried that momentum into their second game Friday picking up a 2-0 win behind another shutout, her team-leading 13th of the season, for sophomore Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community).  Senior Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) garnered the shutout in the opener to pick up her 10th of the year.  In fact, SXU now has 24 shutouts on the season over 36 games.

Megan Nonnemacher threw all 10 frames in Friday's first game and gave up just three hits and two walks, while ringing up 10 strikeouts, for her 16th victory (16-1).  Sears had the hot bat in the game going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.  Her double to left centerfield kicked off the bottom of the 10th inning and then sophomore second baseman Kasey Kanaga (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) tried to move her over to third base with a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first base on the sacrifice attempt went wide and Sears took advantage of the error to score the game-winning run.

In the second game, Nicole Nonnemacher picked up her 14th win (14-2) of the season by allowing just four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  A RBI double down the left field line by junior centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) scored SXU's first run in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior first baseman Amanda Hainlen (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland  CC/Bloomington) used a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the third to bring home Sears from third base and give the Cougars some added insurance with a second run.  Nicole Nonnemacher led the offense as well in the second game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Saint Xavier (33-3 overall/15-1 CCAC) wraps up its four-game weekend home stand with a doubleheader against Grand View University (Iowa) on Saturday, April 19.  The first game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. at SXU Softball Field.  Between the two games Saturday, the three seniors on the 2014 SXU squad will be honored for "Senior Day."
