Pewaukee, Wis. – A two-out RBI single with the bases loaded by junior left fielder Chad Mazur in the bottom of the 12th inning was the difference as Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) won the opening game of a three-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball series with Saint Xavier University by a score of 1-0 Friday afternoon at WCTC Field in Pewaukee, Wis. The Cougars (16-22 overall/11-7 CCAC) had their chances scattering eight hits in the game and leaving eight runners stranded on the base paths, including four in scoring position. Senior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) threw very well for SXU Friday going the first nine innings and allowing just seven hits and two walks, while striking out eight CSU batters.
Senior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) led the Saint Xavier offense going 3-for-5 with a double, while senior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) was 1-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks. Freshman right-hander Adrian Luna (Chicago, Ill./Washington) suffered the loss (4-3) for the Cougars in relief of Vachon. Luna threw 2.2 frames and gave up two hits, a run (earned) and two walks with three strikeouts. Junior Kevin Murphy got the victory (3-5) on the mound for the Wolves going all 12 innings and allowing eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts for the shutout. SXU had one of its best chances to score in the top of the 10th inning when freshman catcher Ryan Pellack (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) opened the frame with a triple to centerfield. However, after an infield groundout, Pellack was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat.
Saint Xavier (16-22 overall/11-7 CCAC) continues the conference series on Saturday, April 19, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at SXU's Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The first game is scheduled for seven innings with the late game slated for nine innings.
