Grand Rapids, Mich. - Despite goals from senior midfielder Matt Prunckle (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and sophomore midfielder Melchor Castro (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not complete a rally attempt falling 3-2 to non-conference foe Aquinas College (Mich.) Tuesday in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars scored the first goal of the game, but the Saints answered with three consecutive goals to secure the victory.
Prunckle scored the first goal of the game when he headed the ball past the opposing goalkeeper off an assist from Castro in the 14th minute of play. However, Aquinas tied the game, 1-1, just over three minutes later when junior forward Erich Jackson found the back of the net off a pass from senior forward Goran Guzinas. Tied 1-1 at the half, Aquinas scored two more goals in the 60th and 63rd minute to take a 3-1 lead. The Cougars did not go down without a fight. With just under five minutes to play in regulation, Castro booted one through off an assist from freshman midfielder Ernad Dzananovic (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) to narrow the Saints lead to one, 3-2. SXU had chances to score in the waning minutes of the game, but the Aquinas defense did its job to pick up the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence Catholic) finished the game with 10 saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (1-3 overall) returns home to face Grand View College (Iowa) on Sunday, September 16. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
