Crestwood, Ill. – Senior left fielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) had a big game going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI, but the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) series with Roosevelt University (Ill.) by a score of 7-6 at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon in Crestwood, Ill. The Cougars (15-20 overall/10-5 CCAC) scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Lakers kept it close with three runs over the second and third innings before scoring four runs over the final two frames, including two in the bottom of the ninth, to take the one-run victory. The two teams were also scheduled to play a second non-conference game Sunday following the first one, but the game was rained out in the second inning.
Senior right-hander Scott Vachon
(Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) got the start on the mound Sunday for SXU and went 7.1 innings allowing 11 hits, five runs (one earned) and no walks with seven strikeouts. Junior right-hander Dan Wetzel
(Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) suffered the loss (3-3) in relief of Vachon and threw the final 1.1 innings giving up three hits, two runs (both earned) and no walks with a strikeout. Myjak got the big hit in the top of the first inning blasting a two-run double to right field to go along with RBI singles in the frame by freshman right fielder Bryan Polak
(Alsip, Ill./Marist) and freshman catcher Ryan Pellack
(Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North). Errors hurt the Cougars over the next two frames as Roosevelt scored three unearned runs to make it a 4-3 game after three full innings of play.
A two-out RBI single through the left side by sophomore centerfielder Steve Carrabotta
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in the top of the fourth gave Saint Xavier a 5-3 edge. After three scoreless innings, freshman pinch hitter Tom Hayes
(Crestwood, Ill./Mount Carmel) scored Myjak from third base on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-3 in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Lakers used a Saint Xavier error and four hits to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth and close to within a run, 6-5. A double play and a fly-out to right field ended SXU's scoring chance in the top of the ninth and Roosevelt got back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the bottom of the inning to drive in the game-winning run. Pellack went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI for the Cougars in Sunday's game.
Saint Xavier (15-20 overall/10-5 CCAC) hosts a conference doubleheader against Holy Cross College (Ind.) on Tuesday, April 15. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
