CHICAGO – Senior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) went 3-for-5 with three doubles and seven RBI's, but big errors in the final inning proved costly as Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) scored four runs in the top of the ninth to rally and beat Saint Xavier University, 13-11, in NAIA baseball action Friday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Trailing 7-1 after the first four innings of play, the Cougars were forced to rally to get back into the game, but six combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings gave the hosts an 11-9 advantage heading into the ninth. A dropped third strike with two outs and then a throwing error tied the game at 11-11 and then a two-run double in the next at-bat scored the go-ahead runs. SXU falls to 13-19 overall with the loss.
Keating was the only Cougar to finish with multiple hits Friday recording three of the team's 10 hits. Freshman right-hander Jeremy Dryier (Alsip, Ill./Shepard) suffered the loss (1-2) on the mound in relief. He threw 1.1 innings and allowed four hits, four runs (one earned) and a walk with three strikeouts. He was one of four pitchers to throw for Saint Xavier in Friday's game. Senior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) scored three runs for the Cougars. The Peregrines jumped out to an early 7-1 lead through four innings behind 10 hits. PUC finished the game with 19 hits, including a pair of doubles and a triple.
Saint Xavier (13-19 overall/8-4 CCAC) gets back to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Saturday, April 12, with a home doubleheader against Roosevelt University (Ill.). The first game is scheduled for seven innings and set a 1 p.m. start at Ferrell Field. The second game is scheduled for nine innings.
