Davenport, Iowa - Despite three saves by freshman goalkeeper Chris Coccaro (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), the No. 5 seeded Saint Xavier University men's soccer team could not pick up the victory against No. 4 seed St. Ambrose University (Iowa) falling, 2-0, in NAIA Region VII Quarterfinals action Tuesday in Davenport, Iowa. The Cougars end their 2005 season with an overall record of 9-9-1, while the Fighting Bees improve to 13-7-2 overall and advance to the semifinals.
St. Ambrose got an early goal 10 minutes into regulation when sophomore defender Clint Mattingly scored off an assist by sophomore forward Greg Lehman. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, SXU came out firing in the second half outshooting SAU, 10-8, after halftime. However, with just over 20 minutes to play in the second half, senior defender Ryan Davis slipped a shot past Coccaro to seal the victory. Freshman midfielder Taylor Marvin was credited with the assist.
Saint Xavier senior midfielder Marco Meier (Bariloche, Argentina) finished with three shots on goal, while sophomore forward Sinisa Vidakovic (Loves Park, Ill./Rockford College) had two. Senior goalkeeper Nick Rojas had a huge second half for St. Ambrose finishing with all of his game-high eight saves after the halftime break.
Saint Xavier finishes its 2005 season with a 9-9-1 overall record and a third-place finish in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular-season standings with a 5-3 mark.
