CHICAGO – Junior first baseman Amanda Hainlen (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC/Bloomington) became the first Saint Xavier University softball player to hit two home runs in a game in over three years in propelling a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) sweep of Trinity International University (Ill.) Friday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (25-3 overall/9-1 CCAC) took the first game, 8-0, in five innings behind another shutout (7) for senior Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community). SXU recorded a 9-1 victory in the late game in five innings as well. Freshman Callie Brown (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) got the game two win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Hainlen went 2-for-3 with her two homers and four RBI in Friday's opener. Former standout Ashley Hunter was the last Saint Xavier player to hit two home runs in a game when she did it on March 31, 2011, in a game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.).
Nonnemacher moved her season record to 12-1 with her victory on the mound in the first game Friday. She threw all five frames and allowed just one hit, while striking out four TIU batters. In addition to Hainlen's huge game, sophomore second baseman Kasey Kanaga (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI and senior right fielder Katie Houlihan (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) went 1-for-1 with two runs scored. After a scoreless first inning, SXU scored at least a run in each of the next four frames to end things early.
The second game proved to be more of the same. Each team scored a run in the first inning, but the Cougars scored four runs in the second and then four more in the fourth to capture the 9-1 win. Freshman third baseman Franchesca Graffeo (Crestwood, Ill./Shepard) had a double, a run scored and three RBI in the nightcap, while freshman shortstop Savannah Kinsella (Munster, Ind./Andrean) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Houlihan and junior centerfielder Shannon Lauret (Beach Park, Ill./Zion-Benton) each had two hits and two runs scored for the Cougars in the second game. Brown allowed just four hits, a run (earned) and a walk with three strikeouts over her five innings of work.
Saint Xavier (25-3 overall/9-1 CCAC) hosts another conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 12, when the Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) Wolves come to town. The first game is scheduled for a noon start at SXU Softball Field.
