Whiting, Ind. – A RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Nicole Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) with two outs in the top of the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie and led to a 3-2 game two victory for the No. 4 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Friday afternoon at the Whiting Sports Complex in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars (17-3 overall/3-1 CCAC) lost the first game, 4-3, on a walk-off solo homer by CCSJ's Jasmine Rivera in the bottom of the seventh inning. The loss was just the third of the season for SXU with all three coming in one-run affairs.
(Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) took the loss (7-2) on the mound for Saint Xavier in Friday's first game going 6.1 innings and allowing seven hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with eight strikeouts. A RBI single by the Crimson Wave in the bottom of the first gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back errors by Calumet College in the top of the second helped SXU plate a pair of runs and take the 2-1 edge. Unfortunately for the Cougars, a wild pitch and a RBI single pushed two across for the Crimson Wave giving them back the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Freshman shortstop Savannah Kinsella
(Munster, Ind./Andrean) tied the game in the top of the fifth with a RBI single up the middle. SXU left a runner stranded at third base in the top of the seventh and CCSJ took advantage in the bottom of the frame with the Rivera walk-off homer.
Senior right-hander Megan Nonnemacher
(Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) recorded the win (8-1) in game two throwing all nine innings and giving up just four hits, two runs (both earned) and eight walks with 10 strikeouts. Junior first baseman Amanda Hainlen
(Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC/Bloomington) brought home sophomore second baseman Kasey Kanaga
(Metamora, Ill./Metamora) from third base on a bunt single in the top of the first to put SXU ahead, 1-0. The Crimson Wave tied the game in the bottom of the first on a RBI single, but the Cougars took the lead again with a run in the top of the second off an error by CCSJ. A RBI double in the bottom of the fifth tied the game again, but after three scoreless frames, Nicole Nonnemacher
ended the second game with her thrilling two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth. Her sister, Megan, put the Crimson Wave down in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
Saint Xavier (17-3 overall/3-1 CCAC) returns to action on Sunday, April 6, with a non-conference road doubleheader with Ashford University (Iowa). The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Clinton, Iowa.
