Lockport, Ill. – Braving cold and windy conditions, the Saint Xavier University women's golf team played its first spring event in the Midwest of the 2014 season over the weekend taking part in the two-day University of St. Francis (Ill.) Spring Invitational at the Prairie Bluff Golf Course in Lockport, Ill.  The Cougars took sixth place overall in the eight-team tournament with a combined team score of 779 (401, 378).  Freshman Taylor Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) led SXU with a ninth-place (tie) individual finish shooting an 82 in Friday's opening round and then an 89 on Saturday for a two-day total of 171.

Freshman Katie Reno (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) shot a pair of rounds of 90 to finish in a tie for 22nd place at 180.  Freshman Courtney Dudgeon (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) shot a 96 on Friday, but rebounded with a team-leading 86 Saturday to finish in a tie for 25th place at 182.  Freshman Ashley Anderson (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) rounded out the team scoring with a 246 (133, 113) to take 41st place.  No. 14 ranked Bethel College (Ind.) won the tournament with a two-day team score of 649 (328, 321).

"I think these ladies handled the cold elements very well as it's been a long winter with very little opportunity to practice or play outside on grass before the tournament," said SXU golf coach Mike Mandakas.  "I'm looking forward to our next tournament as our young team continues to grow and improve."

Saint Xavier continues its spring season in two weeks for the Bethel College Spring Invite on April 11-12.  The event takes place at the Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
