Sheboygan, Wis. – Sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) had an impressive showing with 11 kills, two service aces and four total blocks (one solo), but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped its regular season finale with No. 12 ranked (NCAA Division III) Lakeland College (Wis.) Wednesday night at Woltzen Gymnasium in Sheboygan, Wis. The Cougars (5-14 overall) lost the match in four sets by scores of 16-25, 22-25, 27-25 and 18-25. Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) also totaled double digits in kills Wednesday finishing the night with a team-best 13 to go along with his 11 digs and pair of block assists.
Freshman setter Moises Lopez
(Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tallied a team-leading 31 assists and also had a pair of block assists. Other key performers for SXU were senior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell
(Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) with four kills and two block assists as well as freshman outside hitter Sean Barry
(Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) with five kills and two blocks (one solo). Serving proved to a problem for the Cougars throughout the match Wednesday as the team committed 20 service errors.
Saint Xavier (5-14 overall/5-5 GLD) heads to Perrysburg, Ohio, this weekend to take part in the 2014 Great Lakes Division Tournament. The No. 4 seeded Cougars open the event with an 11 a.m. (eastern) match against No. 5 seed Siena Heights University (Mich.) on Friday, March 28. If SXU defeats Siena Heights, then the Cougars advance to the semifinals match Friday afternoon to take on No. 1 seed Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) at 5 p.m. (eastern).
