Women's Soccer - Mon, Sep. 10, 2007
Muscatine, Iowa - Behind a combined five goals by senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) and senior midfielder Alana LoPresti (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), the No. 4 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team kept its perfect record intact with a pair of weekend wins against Grand View College (Iowa) and St. Ambrose University (Iowa) as part of the St. Ambrose University Classic in Muscatine, Iowa. The Cougars (5-0 overall) defeated Grand View, 3-1, on Saturday and then went on to beat host St. Ambrose, 3-0, in the Sunday game.
SXU was forced to rally in the weekend's first game against Grand View after trailing 1-0 at halftime. However, just eight minutes into the second half, Coby tied the game, 1-1, on an unassisted goal. Coby then gave Saint Xavier the lead for good in the 74th minute of play when she scored again off assists from freshman forward Kelly Steinhaus (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois/Stagg), respectively. With a minute to play in regulation, LoPresti added an insurance goal on a breakaway. Wagner started the game in goal and finished with four saves. The Cougars out-shot Grand View, 20-6, in the game and had nine shots on goal.
Against the host Fighting Bees, Coby again got the scoring started for Saint Xavier with a quick goal just three minutes into the game. Senior defender Cassie Rumpf (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) recorded the assist on the Coby goal. The Cougars tacked on another goal just four minutes later when junior midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley) found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore midfielder Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg). SXU's final goal of the game came in the 28th minute of play when LoPresti capitalized on an assist from senior forward Ariana Robles (West Chicago, Ill./College of DuPage/West Chicago). Wagner picked up her third shutout of the season and tallied three saves in the winning effort. The Cougars out-shot the Fighting Bees, 20-3, in the game, including 12 shots on goal.
Saint Xavier (5-0 overall) opens up its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) this week with a road game on Wednesday, September 12, against Judson College (Ill.). The game is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
