CHICAGO - Averaging 44.3 assists, 12.3 digs, and 5.3 kills a match, senior setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) helped lead the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a 3-1 record over the weekend, including a five-game match win over No. 14 ranked Cornerstone University (Ill.), as part of the Cougar Invitational at the Shannon Center in Chicago. SXU (6-3 overall/0-1 CCAC) picked up wins against Saint Mary College (Kan.), Spring Arbor University (Mich.), and Cornerstone (Mich.), respectively, before falling in its final match of the tourney to McKendree University (Ill.).
In the first match Friday against Saint Mary, SXU won in three straight games 30-20, 30-19, 30-17 led by a team-high 11 kills from senior middle blocker Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew). Looby finished with 25 assists in the match, while senior outside hitter Jessica Synowiecki (Oak Lawn, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) and junior right side Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) each tallied 12 digs.
Senior middle blocker Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) stepped up big in the second match of the night Friday, which saw Saint Xavier defeat Spring Arbor (Mich.) in four games 23-30, 30-23, 30-13, 30-20. Breshock finished the match with 16 kills and five service aces, both team-highs. Looby tallied 44 assists, while Carls and Gullickson each recorded 21 digs.
Saint Xavier's morning match Saturday against Cornerstone proved to be a nail-biter as the Cougars played tough and came away with a five-game victory 25-30, 30-25, 32-30, 27-30, 17-15. Breshock led the way offensively with 20 kills in addition to her five solo blocks. Looby was stellar as well with 58 assists and 13 digs, while Gullickson finished with a team-best 30 digs and three service aces.
Possibly worn down from the energy of the previous victory, SXU had trouble finishing games late in its final match of the weekend against McKendree (Ill.) losing in four games 30-23, 29-31, 30-32, 28-30. Breshock had 19 kills and five total blocks for the Cougars, while Looby set up 57 assists. Senior libero Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) led the team in digs with 21.
Saint Xavier (6-3 overall/0-1 CCAC) continues its season on Tuesday, September 11, with a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee, Wis.
