Kansas City, Mo. – Saint Xavier University senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was one of just 10 players selected nationwide to represent the NAIA on the 2014 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball All-Star team. This inaugural event will take place on Saturday, March 22, at 8 p.m. CDT at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo., in conjunction with the 77th Annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship. These 10 players will take on the Division I All-Stars at the NABC-NAIA Men's Basketball All-Star Game, presented by US Bank. Karp has led the No. 6 ranked Cougars this season averaging team-bests of 25.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game.
"What a tremendous honor for a wonderful young man," said SXU men's basketball coach Tom O'Malley. "Brad has had an amazing career here over these last four years and I'm glad that the NAIA is recognizing him for his achievements. To have the chance to represent the Division II side of NAIA basketball as an All-Star is a special privilege, especially in the event's first year, and I can't think of a player more deserving."
The Division II All-Stars represent 10 different institutions and seven conferences. The Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and The Sun Conference each landed a pair of players on the team. Seven of NAIA Division II's top scorers are on the elite squad. Karp joins senior guard Derek Semenas from Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) as the two representatives from the CCAC. All players with senior eligibility status from the Division II ranks were in the selection pool. The 10-person Division II team was selected by the NABC-NAIA Men's Basketball All-Star Committee, which is comprised of head coaches from both the NAIA Division I and Division II ranks. The selection criteria takes into account season statistics, awards and postseason experience.
Karp leads Saint Xavier into next week's NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo. The Cougars bring their 29-4 overall record into a first round match-up against Cincinnati Christian University (Ohio) on Wednesday, March 12, at 10:15 a.m. CCU comes into the tournament with a 19-13 record and earned an automatic bid by winning the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) Tournament championship.
