Kansas City, Mo. - Head coach Tom O'Malley and the No. 7 nationally ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team received word that they will take on Cincinnati Christian University (Ohio) in the first round of the 2014 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo., when the seeds and pairings for the event were officially released by the NAIA national office Wednesday night. The 32-team, single-elimination tournament is divided into four, eight-team brackets with the top 16 teams seeded. The Cougars will match up against the Golden Eagles in first-round action on Wednesday, March 12, with a scheduled 10:15 a.m. (central) tip-off at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
Cincinnati Christian comes into the National Championship unranked in the final NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Golden Eagles enter the contest with a 19-13 overall record and qualified for the National Championship after claiming the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) tournament championship with an 83-71 victory over then-No. 2 ranked Indiana University-Southeast. CCU is making its first-ever trip to the NAIA Division II National Championship.
Saint Xavier has had an impressive season thus far posting a 29-4 overall record and earning an automatic bid to the National Championship by winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament championship with an 85-74 win over No. 1 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). This marks the second straight season that SXU has advanced to the NAIA National Championship. The Cougars fell in the second round of the 2013 NAIA Division II National Championship to No. 10 ranked Indiana-Southeast by a score of 83-73.
