CHICAGO - Senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) went off for 25 points, six rebounds and five assists to guide No. 7 ranked and No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University to an 84-61 win over rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (27-4 overall) shot an amazing 56 percent from the field (33-for-59) and were aggressive on the boards pulling down 39 rebounds compared to just 21 for the Fighting Saints. Senior point guard Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) also had a nice night for SXU recording 13 points, nine assists, five assists and three steals.
Sophomore forward Josh Mawhorr (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) posted 13 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) chipped in 10 points and five assists. SXU jumped out a 16-0 lead to open the game paced by seven points from Karp. The Cougars held the double-digit lead for most of the first half and took a 42-25 advantage into halftime. SXU controlled the remainder of the game never relinquishing its double-digit lead the rest of the way and going ahead by as many as 26 points, 75-49, with eight minutes to play. USF ends its season with a 15-15 overall record.
Saint Xavier (27-4 overall/16-3 CCAC) advances to the semifinals of the CCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which takes place at Panella Court on the campus of Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in Milwaukee. The Cougars take on the winner of Wednesday night's Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) and Roosevelt University (Ill.) game for the semifinals match-up. The ONU-RU was in overtime late Wednesday. Game times for Friday have yet to be announced by Cardinal Stritch.
