Georgetown, Ky. –  Managing a combined seven hits and a run over its season-opening doubleheader, the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to No. 23 ranked Georgetown College (Ky.) Saturday afternoon at Robert N. Wilson Field in Georgetown, Ky.  The Cougars (0-2 overall) had a chance late in the opening game down 3-0 with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh; but a pitching change by the Tigers led to an infield pop-up, a run off a walk and a double play to finish the game.  Junior right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) had a solid start on the mound for SXU in Saturday's first game throwing all six frames and allowing just three hits, three runs (one earned) and three walks with six strikeouts.

The Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single to left field by junior third baseman Rick Reyes.  After four scoreless frames, Georgetown took advantage of a pair of errors by the Cougars to plate two more runs and build a 3-0 advantage.  Singles by senior right fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and senior first baseman Thomas Keating (Chicago, Ill./Joliet JC/St. Laurence) in the top of the seventh helped load the bases with no outs, but a bases-loaded walk by freshman designated hitter Tom Hayes (Crestwood, Ill./Mount Carmel) to score Klein from third base proved to be the only run production for the Cougars.  In the late game, the Tigers scored seven runs over the first three innings to pull away early.  Senior right-hander Dan Maton (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) threw the first two innings and allowed one hit and six walks en route to five runs, all earned.  Freshman reliever Jesse Lopez (Chicago, Ill./Washington) suffered the loss going two innings giving up two hits, two runs and two walks with a strikeout.

Saint Xavier (0-2 overall) wraps up its four-game weekend series with Georgetown College on Sunday, February 23.  The first game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (eastern) start at Wilson Field.
