Palos Heights, Ill. - With three players scoring in double figures, the No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team closed out its regular season slate with a 61-43 road victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. Junior forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) led the charge with 16 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and senior point guard Jordan Brandt (Winamac, Ind./Winamac) chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Cougars wrap up the regular season with an impressive 26-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in conference play.
In what has become a recent trend, SXU used tough defense to help aid its victory holding the host Trolls to just 30 percent shooting (17-for-56) and helping force 28 turnovers behind 12 steals. Another key performer for Saint Xavier was red-shirt freshman guard Sidney Prasse (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) with eight points and three rebounds. Brandt had the hot shooting hand for the Cougars Saturday hitting all three of her three-point attempts en route to her 11-point performance. In addition to her points and rebounds, Stuut also finished with a game-leading five steals and three assists.
The Cougars got off to an uncharacteristic slow start falling behind 6-0 and scoring their first basket on a lay-up by junior forward Margaret Wildner (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) at the 14-minute mark of the first half. A three-pointer by Brandt sparked a 15-2 run that gave SXU a 22-10 lead with five minutes remaining in the frame. Leading 30-16 at the half, the Cougars continued to heat up in the second half pushing their lead as high as 25 points with 6:28 left to play on a lay-up by Broski.
Saint Xavier (26-4 overall/16-2 CCAC) now prepares for next week's CCAC Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins on Monday, February 24. The Cougars have a first-round bye and host a quarterfinals game at the Shannon Center on Wednesday, February 26. Game time and opponent has yet to be determined.
