CHICAGO – Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) was an unstoppable force posting a team-best 12 kills and an attack percentage of .379 to lead the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team over Robert Morris University (Ill.) in NAIA Great Lakes Division action Friday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (2-10 overall/2-3 GLD) took the first two tight sets by scores of 28-26 and 30-28 and then used that momentum to pull away early in the third set to take the match, 25-17. As a team, SXU had one of its best offensive outputs of the season racking up 36 kills to just 13 errors for an attack percentage of .247 for the match.
Sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) also had a solid match for Saint Xavier totaling eight kills and three block assists. Freshman outside hitter Sean Barry (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) chipped in seven kills for the Cougars, while freshman setter Moises Lopez (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) led the team with 30 assists and nine digs. Senior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) had a great match defensively at the net recording seven total blocks, including three solo stops. O'Connell also surpassed 400 kills for his career, just the third player in SXU men's volleyball history to do so, with his four kills on the night.
Saint Xavier (2-10 overall/2-3 GLD) heads to Dubuque, Iowa, on Tuesday, February 25, for a non-conference match against No. 6 ranked Clarke University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
