CHICAGO – Senior guards Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) each had big nights in helping No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University roll to a 90-76 victory over Roosevelt University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game was the final regular season home contest for SXU and the team's three seniors Karp, Simpson and guard Munir Smith (Hazel Crest, Ill./Mooseheart) were recognized in a pre-game ceremony in honor of "Senior Night." Karp also notched a couple of key career milestones in the game surpassing 1,000 rebounds (1,007) and moving up to No. 5 all-time on the Illinois college basketball all-time scoring list with 2,777 points.
Karp finished the night with game-highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds. Simpson was tough as well posting 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and sophomore forward Tony Core (Matteson, Ill./Tinley Park) were also both instrumental in Wednesday's win. Krieger dropped in 16 points and had a team-best six assists, while Core tallied 14 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Josh Mawhorr (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) also scored in double figures for Saint Xavier with 10 points. The Lakers were led by junior guard Tyree York with 19 points and six assists.
The game was back and forth over the first seven minutes of play before SXU used a 9-0 run capped by a three-point play by Karp to build a 10-point edge, 20-10, with nine minutes left to play in the frame. The Cougars took a 40-33 lead into the halftime break and extended their advantage early in the second half going ahead by as many as 20 points near the midway point of the second half. SXU had another solid shooting effort hitting 52 percent of its shots from the field (34-for-65). The Cougars also took care of the basketball committing just three turnovers on the night.
Saint Xavier (25-4 overall/15-3 CCAC) closes out the 2013-14 regular season slate on Saturday, February 22, with a road game against conference foe Trinity Christian College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Palos Heights, Ill.
