Deerfield, Ill. – Senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) scored 32 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to an 80-72 road victory over Trinity International University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Saturday night at the Sports Meyer Complex in Deerfield, Ill. The Cougars (24-4 overall/14-3 CCAC) used a late run to pull away after a tight battle throughout where neither team ever led by more than nine points. SXU also got a huge spark off the bench from freshman point guard Kyle Huppe (Edgerton, Kan./Gardner Edgerton), who sank four three-pointers en route to a 17-point performance.
Sophomore forward Tony Core (Matteson, Ill./Tinley Park) also had a nice game Saturday for Saint Xavier with 13 points and eight rebounds, while senior point guard Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) tallied 10 points, five assists and four steals. The Cougars overcame a struggle on the offensive side getting the victory despite hitting just 43 percent (25-for-58) of their shot attempts from the field.
Saint Xavier (24-4 overall/14-3 CCAC) welcomes Roosevelt University (Ill.) to the Shannon Center in Chicago on Wednesday, February 19. The regular season home finale for the Cougars is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Bob Hallberg Court. Prior to the game, SXU will honor its 2013-14 senior class in recognition of "Senior Night."
