CHICAGO – Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) tallied a combined 21 kills and three block assists in helping lead the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team to a split of its two matches on the weekend, including its first victory of the 2014 season, a three-set decision (25-20, 25-12, 28-26) over Great Lakes Division foe Siena Heights University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon in Adrian, Mich. The Cougars (1-8 overall, 1-2 Great Lakes) lost its first match of the two-match weekend road trip falling to Lourdes University (Ohio) in four sets, 16-25, 25-15, 20-25 and 18-25 in Great Lakes Division play Friday evening.
Cousin posted a team-best nine kills and a pair of block assists in Friday's loss to Lourdes, while freshman outside hitter Sean Barry (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) recorded seven kills and two service aces. Freshman setter Moises Lopez (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) led the Cougars with 23 assists and an ace. Senior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) gave SXU strong defensive play at the net with four block assists Friday to go along with five kills.
Cousin led the way again with 12 kills Saturday against the Saints and sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) was strong offensively as well with nine kills and two aces. Barry was tough again as well with seven kills and match-high four aces, while senior right side Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) had eight kills and team-leading four block assists. Lopez set up the strong offensive showing with 37 assists. As a team, SXU posted 41 kills for an attack percentage of .310 on the match.
Saint Xavier (1-8 overall/2-1 GLD) returns to Chicago and hosts a conference match against No. 10 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago on Tuesday, February 11.
