River Forest, Ill. – Despite match-bests of 14 kills and five service aces by sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South), the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team could not capture its first win of the season falling in five sets to NCAA Division III foe Dominican University (Ill.) at the Igini Sports Forum Tuesday night in River Forest, Ill. The Cougars (0-5 overall) fell by scores of 25-15, 19-25, 21-25, 26-24 and 10-15. Dominican was tough at the net Tuesday racking up 33 total blocks (three solos) to stifle many of the SXU's offensive chances.
Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) and freshman outside hitter Sean Barry (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) each posted 11 kills in the match for Saint Xavier. Barry also tallied eight digs and three aces for the Cougars. Senior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) was tough offensively and defensively finishing with nine kills and a team-best seven total blocks (two solos). Freshman Dan O'Keefe (Evergreen Park, Ill./Loyola (La.)/St. Rita) led the Cougars in the digs category with 11.
Saint Xavier (0-5 overall/0-1 GLC) jumps right back into action on Wednesday, January 29, with a home match against No. 6 ranked Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
