Arlington Heights, Ill. – Sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted 15 kills, four block assists and a pair of service aces, but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team dropped its Great Lakes Conference opener in heart-breaking fashion to Robert Morris University (Ill.) Tuesday night in Arlington Heights, Ill. The Cougars (0-4 overall/0-1 GLD) fell in five sets by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 19-25, 25-23 and 14-16. SXU had a chance to win the match leading 14-13 in the final set, but recorded a service error on the ensuing play and RMU scored the next two points to secure the match.
Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) also tallied double-digits in kills with 12 to go along with his five digs on the night. Senior middle blocker J.T. O'Connell (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) had six kills and team-high five total blocks (one solo), while senior setter Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) established a new career-high total in assists with 37. Red-shirt freshman Matthew Mead (Palos Park, Ill./Marist) posted eight kills and six digs for SXU, while senior libero Nick Piccirillo (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Rita) led the Cougars in digs with seven.
Saint Xavier (0-4 overall/0-1 GLC) returns to action on Tuesday, January 28, with a road match against NCAA Division III foe Dominican University (Ill.). The match starts at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
