CHICAGO – Senior outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) tallied a match-best 15 kills, but the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team fell to No. 10 ranked Clarke University (Iowa) Tuesday night in its home opener on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (0-2 overall) dropped the non-conference match in three straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-22. Cousin also surpassed 600 career kills in the match and sits firmly at No. 2 all-time in program history behind only Aaron Porter with 815 career kills.
Sophomore middle blocker Sam Kull (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) was also tough offensively for SXU Tuesday finishing with seven kills to go along with a team-leading six block assists. Senior setter Jacob Siska (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) led the Cougars in both assists (20) and digs (11) on the night, while freshman middle blocker Noel Bragagnolo (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) was solid defensively at the net with four block assists. The Crusaders were led by junior Tyler Wills and sophomore Joe Biros with 10 kills apiece.
Saint Xavier (0-2 overall) begins the first of a three-match road stand on Thursday, January 16, heading to Davenport, Iowa, to take on No. 6 ranked Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
