South Bend, Ind. - Entering the game needing just 16 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Saint Xavier University history, senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) shattered the mark dropping a game-high 28 points in leading the visiting Cougars to a 106-85 victory over Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. Karp broke a career scoring record that has stood at SXU since 1978 when Mike Walaczek wrapped up his playing career with 2,517 points. Karp now sits at 2,530 career points.
"It is a very cool accomplishment, but as special as it is, our team wants to accomplish a lot more this season," said Karp. "When I started my career at Saint Xavier University, I would never have expected to break this record and score this many points. It is hard to focus on it right now, because we are playing really well as a team and I want to help keep that momentum going. One thing is for sure, I would never have been able to achieve this record without my current and former teammates and coaches. They deserve a lot of the credit."
Junior guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) also had a huge game for the Cougars draining four three-pointers en route to 25 points. Senior point guard Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) contributed 14 points, five assists and three steals. Senior guard Munir Smith (Hazel Crest, Ill./Mooseheart) also scored in double figures for Saint Xavier Saturday with 12 points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds. The Cougars were red hot from the floor shooting 63 percent (37-for-59), including a blistering 72 percent (18-for-25) in the second half. It also marked the third straight game that SXU has topped the century mark after scoring 113 points against Silver Lake College (Wis.) last Sunday and 111 points against Trinity Christian College Wednesday.
The Cougars jumped out to a 19-10 lead and never trailed in the game. A three-pointer by Simpson at the 10:49 mark of the first half gave Saint Xavier its first double-digit advantage at 27-17. Karp scored his 16th point to set the record on a short jumper in the paint with just under a minute remaining in the first half. The Titans cut the lead to six points, 55-49, at the break, but the hot shooting continued for SXU and a 10-2 run to open the second half pushed the lead back into double digits. The Cougars stayed in control the rest of the way pushing the lead to as high as 22 points late in the frame.
Saint Xavier (16-2 overall/6-1 CCAC) returns home and hosts conference foe Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) on Wednesday, January 15. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
