CHICAGO – Five different players scored in double figures as the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team logged its 11th straight victory Wednesday in a 111-84 win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) on Bob Hallberg Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the way with 26 points and is now just 16 points from breaking Saint Xavier's all-time scoring record of 2,517 points, which was set by Mike Walaszek in 1978. Sophomore forward Tony Core (Matteson, Ill./Tinley Park) also had a great game for the Cougars scoring a career-best 14 points on impressive 7-for-9 shooting from the floor.
Also scoring in double figures in Wednesday's big victory were senior point guard Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) with 25 points to go along with his game-high five assists, junior guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) with 16 points and sophomore guard Darius Draper (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Francis/Stagg) chipping in 10 points. Karp also joined senior guard Munir Smith (Hazel Crest, Ill./Mooseheart) with eight rebounds apiece to lead the Cougars. SXU was on fire in both halves shooting 56 percent (20-for-36) in the opening frame and an amazing 61 percent (23-for-38) after the break. The Cougars jumped out to an early 21-7 lead in the first seven minutes of action and continued to roll from there building their lead as high as 39 points late in the second half.
Saint Xavier (15-2 overall/5-1 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, January 11, heading to South Bend, Ind., to take on Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. (eastern) tip-off.
