Men's Soccer - Sat, Oct. 15, 2005
Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team did not seem to have an answer for No. 8 ranked Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) Saturday night in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Eagles scored two goals in each half to pick up the 4-0 shutout victory over the Cougars, who fall to 8-7 overall with the non-conference loss.
Senior defender Danny Collins put the first goal on the board for Embry-Riddle scoring on a header from junior midfielder Daniel Whelan in the 34th minute of play. Just nine minutes later, Whelan got the ball past SXU senior goalkeeper James Kline (Canton, Ohio/Perry) to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0, at the half.
Embry-Riddle extended its lead in the 55th minute of the game when freshman forward Peter Masters received a corner kick from junior midfielder Craig Oldis. The fourth and final goal for the Eagles came with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game when Whelan scored again on assists from sophomore forward Mike DeAngelis and Masters, respectively. Kline finished with three saves for the Cougars. SXU was outshot, 14-4, in the game. Saint Xavier (8-7 overall/4-3 CCAC) takes a week off before resuming its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate with a road game against Trinity International University (Ill.) on Saturday, October 22. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
