CHICAGO - Behind 20 points and eight rebounds by junior guard Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), the No. 13 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team got a huge Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road victory Wednesday evening by upsetting No. 5 Roosevelt University (Ill.), 72-66, at the Goodman Center in Chicago. Junior forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) was also key to Wednesday's win turning in 17 points and 16 rebounds. The game lived up to its billing with the two top-ranked NAIA teams playing to 13 lead changes and 10 tie scores over the 40-minute affair. Neither squad posted a double-digit lead throughout and SXU was forced to sink free throws in the final 17 seconds to build its six-point edge.
Saint Xavier also got solid outings from senior point guard Jordan Brandt
(Winamac, Ind./Winamac) and sophomore forward Caitlin McMahon
(Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Brandt recorded five points, five assists and six steals, while McMahon had six points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. The Lakers were paced by a huge game from senior guard Casey Davis with 23 points and 12 rebounds. The Cougars overcame a tough shooting night (28-for-75, 37 percent) by limiting Roosevelt to just 34 percent shooting (24-for-71) from the floor and helping force 17 Lakers turnovers with solid defense. SXU scored 20 of its 72 points off the RU miscues.
The defense really paid off in the final three minutes of regulation as Roosevelt scored its final points of the game on a lay-up by Davis at the 2:52 mark. A lay-up by senior forward Chrissy Heine
(Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) a minute later broke a 66-66 tie and free throws by junior guard Maloree Johnson
(Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and Broski in the closing seconds sealed the win. The victory keeps the Cougars perfect (8-0) in the all-time series with the Lakers.
Saint Xavier (7-3 overall/2-1 CCAC) heads back to its home court on Saturday, December 7, for another CCAC match-up. The Cougars take on Judson University (Ill.) at 1 p.m. on Bob Hallberg
Court at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
