CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University senior linebacker Dave Marciano earned the final Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Defensive Player of the Week award Monday for his performance in Saturday's 34-7 road victory over MSFA Midwest League foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in Bourbonnais, Ill. It marks the third time this season that a SXU player has earned the weekly conference defensive honor with fellow senior linebacker Zach Dolph (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) claiming it back on September 9 and October 28. The victory over the Tigers was the regular season finale for Saint Xavier and the final collegiate game for Marciano.
Marciano led the Cougars in total tackles Saturday with nine, including eight solo stops. He also posted a game-leading two sacks for 14 yards. Marciano paced a defensive effort that allowed just 223 yards of total offense and a late fourth-quarter touchdown. He wrapped up a stellar collegiate career with a senior season that saw him finish second overall on the team in both total tackles (92) and tackles for losses (11.5).
Saint Xavier finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 7-4 and third place in the MSFA Midwest League at 4-2. The Cougars also finished ranked No. 18 in the final NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
