Elgin, Ill. – After playing to a 2-2 tie over two overtime periods, Saint Xavier University kept its season alive by defeating Judson University (Ill.) in a penalty kick shootout (4-2) Saturday afternoon in Elgin, Ill., to advance to next week's semifinals of the 2013 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Men's Soccer Tournament. The game is credited as a tie for record purposes for both teams, but the Cougars advance in tournament play as a result of the shootout. Junior midfielder Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) converted the final penalty kick to seal the shootout victory for SXU Saturday.
Things did not look promising for the Cougars in the early portions of Saturday's contest as the host Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute when junior midfielder Bruno Oliveira found the back of the net. Judson took the 1-0 advantage into halftime and added to it less than eight minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Michael Berrequin scored to give his team a 2-0 edge. Junior midfielder Tom Lojek (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) cut the deficit in half in the 64th minute when he scored on a free kick.
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, junior defender Rene Leon (Cicero, Ill./Morton College/Morton West) tied the game on an unassisted shot. Senior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) posted seven saves in goal for the Cougars. In addition to Simoes, sophomore forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph), Leon and Lojek all converted on their penalty kicks during the shootout.
Saint Xavier (7-9-2 overall/6-4-1 CCAC) travels to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Wednesday, November 13, to take on No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Game time for Wednesday's CCAC Tournament semifinals contest has yet to be announced.
