Manitowoc, Wis. - Senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with 34 points, 15 rebounds and six steals in leading No. 11 ranked Saint Xavier University to a 113-88 road win over Silver Lake College (Wis.) in collegiate men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Manitowoc, Wis. The Cougars (2-0 overall) shot an impressive 65 percent (41-for-63) from the field to aid the winning effort, including an amazing 82 percent (27-for-33) in second-half action. It was a total team effort with 13 different SXU players seeing action and contributing with 11 of those players scoring at least two points.
Senior point guard Michael Simpson (North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) and sophomore forward Josh Mawhorr (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central) each tallied 17 points for Saint Xavier Saturday. Karp shot a stellar 13-for-16 from the field, while Simpson shot 6-for-9 and Mawhorr converted 7-for-11 on the day. Junior forward Andre Arrington (Chicago, Ill./Simpson College/Forman) and sophomore forward Tony Core (Matteson, Ill./Tinley Park) each chipped in nine points for Saint Xavier. The Cougars struggled in the first half shooting just 47 percent (14-for-30) and trailing 47-45 at halftime. However, SXU responded with 68 points after the break to capture the key road victory.
Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) takes part in the two-day Trinity Christian College Classic next weekend. The Cougars take on University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 15, in Palos Heights, Ill., to open the event. SXU wraps up play in the Classic with a 12 p.m. game on Saturday, November 16, against Great Lakes Christian College.
