Joliet, Ill. - The performances of senior forward Lissa Coby (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) and sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois) not only enabled No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University to open its 2007 campaign in strong fashion with a 3-0 shutout victory over No. 16 Siena Heights University (Mich.) last Friday. It also landed the Cougar pair the women's soccer Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week accolades, respectively.
Coby gained the offensive distinction after contributing to each of Saint Xavier's three goals with her two tallies and one assist. The five points also enabled Coby to become the Cougars' all-time points leader. Over her three-plus seasons, she has now totaled 167 points.
Wagner's play in goal earned her defensive honors in the league, where she stopped each of Siena Heights' five shots on goal to post the season-opening shutout. Wagner picked up right where she left off a year ago when she earned NAIA All-American First Team honors as a freshman.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) continues its season next weekend in Pulaski, Tenn., as participants of the Martin Methodist College Classic. On Saturday, September 1, the Cougars will take on Auburn University-Montgomery (Ala.) at 1:30 p.m. eastern time before wrapping up the tourney on Sunday with an 11 a.m. (eastern) game against Louisiana State University-Shreveport (La.).Click here to go to the CCAC Player of the Week page.
