CHICAGO - Behind big nights by senior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and sophomore forward Josh Mawhorr (Muncie, Ind./Muncie Central), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team won its 2013-14 season opener over Indiana University-Northwest in dominating fashion, 95-71, Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (1-0 overall) jumped out to an early 15-4 lead just over five minutes into the game and never looked back en route to the 24-point victory. Karp finished with 25 points on 12-for-21 shooting from the field, while Mawhorr had a stellar all-around outing with 19 points and team-bests of seven rebounds and eight assists.
Mawhorr also was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor en route to his impressive outing. In his first game after transferring in from conference rival Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), senior point guard Michael Simpson
(North Chicago, Ill./Cardinal Stritch/North Chicago) had a solid effort as well with nine points, four assists and two steals. Two other transfers, junior forward Andre Arrington
(Chicago, Ill./Simpson College/Forman) and sophomore guard Darius Draper
(Palos Hills, Ill./University of St. Francis/Stagg), each had nine points for SXU Tuesday. The Cougars led 51-31 at halftime and opened up the second half with a 16-6 scoring run.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall) heads north to Manitowoc, Wis., on Saturday, November 9, for a game against Silver Lake College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
