Miami Gardens, Fla. - The Saint Xavier University men's soccer team used three, second-half goals to force a 3-3 tie with No. 25 ranked St. Thomas University (Fla.) Sunday in non-conference men's soccer action in Miami Gardens, Fla. The game marked the end of SXU's five-day Florida trip as the Cougars return to Chicago with an overall record of 9-4-2.
St. Thomas built a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals at the 17-minute mark and in the 34th minute, respectively. In the 66th minute, STU struck again with another goal to go ahead, 3-0. However, the Saint Xavier offense caught fire over the game's next 20 minutes starting with a goal in the 69th minute by freshman forward Tim Engel (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) off an assist from sophomore defender Gabriel Razo (Chicago, Ill./DePaul University).
The Cougars then got two goals in less than a minute span when senior forward Anthony Carev (Glen Ellyn, Ill./College of DuPage) scored on a free kick in the 75th minute of play followed by a header by junior forward and co-captain Chris Bartley (Park Forest, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) from senior defender and co-captain Chad Mozden (Palos Heights, Ill./Moraine Valley CC) in the 76th minute to knot the score. SXU outshot St. Thomas 8-4 in the game.
The Cougars return home to face Moody Bible Institute (Ill.) for a non-conference game on Monday, October 18, at SXU stadium in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
