Arlington Heights, Ill. – Sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) was huge at the net combining for 27 kills and 10 total blocks (four solos) in helping the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its two Friday matches at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Crossover Tournament hosted by Robert Morris University (Ill.) in Arlington Heights, Ill. The Cougars (12-12 overall/5-7 CCAC) dropped their 4 p.m. match to rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) in four sets by scores of 25-20, 19-25, 20-25 and 23-25. However, SXU rebounded in the 6 p.m. match against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) winning in five sets 25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-21 and 15-11.
Gregerson led the way in the opening match against USF recording 14 kills and five total blocks (two solos). Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert
(Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) also had a nice effort with 11 kills and a solo block, while sophomore right side Meghan Falsey
(Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) also hit double figures in kills with 10. Junior setter Kelli Shaffer
(Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) posted 38 assists, two service aces and 10 digs. Junior libero Dominique Aramburu
(Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) also played well for SXU with team-highs of 19 digs and three service aces.
In the victory over Calumet College, Gregerson posted 13 kills and Hackert had 12 kills to pace the offensive charge. Shaffer totaled 33 assists, four kills and six digs for the Cougars. Aramburu was solid defensively again with a team-best 13 digs, while junior defensive specialist Jessica Galotta
(Chicago, Ill./Parkland CC/Mother McAuley) played a large role in the winning effort with seven kills, two service aces and 12 digs.
Saint Xavier (12-12 overall/5-7 CCAC) wraps up CCAC Crossover play on Saturday, October 26, in Arlington Heights, Ill. The Cougars take on Indiana University-South Bend (Ind.) in a 2 p.m. match to wrap up the Crossover.
