Palos Heights, Ill. - A hat trick by junior midfielder Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) gave Saint Xavier University a big Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road win, 3-1, over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Schaaf Field in Palos Heights, Ill. It is the fifth victory in the last six games for the Cougars after a 1-6 mark to open the 2013 season. After the game was locked 1-1 at halftime, Simoes added two second-half scores to complete the hat trick and secure the road win. SXU is now 6-7-0 overall and 6-2-0 in conference play.
Simoes gave the Cougars the lead in the 33rd minute when he scored off a shot in the box set up on an assist by junior midfielder Tom Lojek (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg). With less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Trolls tied things up when senior forward Noe Quirarte finished off a shot supplied by an assist from senior forward Joey Bahena. Simoes put SXU ahead, 2-1, in the 70th minute on an unassisted shot from the top of the box. In the 88th minute, Simoes put the game out of reach when he found the back of the net on a shot in the box. Freshman midfielder Kamil Szczesniak (Skomielna Biala, Poland/Reavis) recorded the assist on Simoes' third goal. Senior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) finished with three saves in goal for the Cougars Saturday.
Saint Xavier (6-7-0 overall/6-2-0 CCAC) makes its way up to Milwaukee, Wis., on Tuesday, October 22, for a key conference road match-up with Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
