CHICAGO – Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) notched a new career-high kills total (17) and tied a career-high in total blocks (8) in leading the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a thrilling non-conference victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Thursday night at the Keating Center in Chicago. The match went all five sets with scores of 25-11, 23-25, 25-15, 21-25 and 18-16. The Cougars improved to 11-10 overall on the season with the victory. Saint Xavier totaled 57 kills and 28 total blocks in the match.
Junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) also set a new career-high total Thursday with 47 assists to go along with her five kills and eight digs on the night. Sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) also had a nice outing with a season-high tying 13 kills and season-best nine total blocks (three solos). Junior outside hitter Jessica Galotta (Chicago, Ill./Parkland CC/Mother McAuley) recorded 10 kills towards the winning effort and also tallied a season-high 18 digs. Sophomore right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) chipped in a career-high 22 digs, while junior libero Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) led the Cougars in digs with 25 digs.
Saint Xavier (11-10 overall/4-5 CCAC) gets back to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Tuesday, October 22, with a tough road match against North Division leader Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Milwaukee.
