CHICAGO – Goals by sophomore forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph) and junior midfielder Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario/Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) provided the necessary offense as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team outlasted Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 2-1, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Wednesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.  Simoes got the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute of action off a free kick attempt from 10 yards out and the Cougar defense held firm the rest of the way to secure the key conference victory.  SXU moves to 5-7-0 overall this season with the win and remains in a tie for second place in the conference standings at 5-2-0.

Senior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) helped lead the strong defensive effort finishing Wednesday's game with seven saves.  Gutierrez gave Saint Xavier a 1-0 advantage in the 22nd minute when he broke free from the defense and scored on a shot set up off an assist by junior defender Rene Leon (Cicero, Ill./Morton College/Morton West).  Four minutes later, the Crimson Wave tied things up when a long free kick by senior defender Andrew Yousif got behind the Cougar defense and junior sweeper Stewart Thur redirected it into the net.  On the final goal, junior midfielder Tom Lojek (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) tapped it over to Simoes on a free kick attempt and Simoes punched it through a wall of CCSJ defenders to record the game-winning score.  SXU finished the game with 12 total shots and 10 on goal with Gutierrez, Lojek and Simoes combining for eight of them.

Saint Xavier (5-7-0 overall/5-2-0 CCAC) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., on Saturday, October 19, for a conference road match-up against Trinity Christian College (Ill.).  The game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start and kicks off a three-game road stretch for the Cougars.
