CHICAGO – A pair of first-half goals by freshman forward Mariana Hoerr (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas) provided all the spark the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team needed in a 3-0 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The win ended a four-game losing skid for the Cougars and improved the team's overall record to 4-8-1 and 2-5-0 in the conference standings. In addition, SXU freshman keeper Alex Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) logged her third career shutout behind eight saves.
Hoerr scored the game's first goal in the 41st minute of play on a break-away set up by assists from junior utility player Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and freshman midfielder Delanie Bosworth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville). Three minutes later, Hoerr found the back of the net again on a spinning shot from 10 yards out. Sophomore forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and junior utility player Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) recorded the assists on Hoerr's second score. The Cougars took the 2-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime and held it until the final seconds of regulation when Marissa Graves added a third goal off a header set up by a well-placed free kick from sophomore defender Rachel Didier (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East).
Saint Xavier (4-8-1 overall/2-5-0 CCAC) begins a three-game road stretch on Saturday, October 19, with a game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a noon start in Palos Heights, Ill.
