CHICAGO – Sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) finished the night with 11 kills, three service aces and six total blocks (one solo) to help propel the Saint Xavier University volleyball team to a non-conference victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Thursday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The match lasted four sets with SXU dropping the first one, 22-25, but bouncing back to take the next three, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-16. With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-10 overall this season.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Galotta (Chicago, Ill./Parkland CC/Mother McAuley) also posted 11 kills towards Thursday's victory to go along with 16 digs and three block assists. Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) recorded 10 kills and match-best seven block assists for the Cougars, while junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) had 38 assists, seven digs and five block assists. Sophomore right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) led SXU in digs with 18 in the match. She also led the team with four service aces and posted six kills as well. In the second set, the Cougars tallied an impressive attack percentage of .394 led by 16 kills and only three attacking errors.
Saint Xavier (10-10 overall/4-5 CCAC) takes a week off before heading on the road to take on Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) again on Thursday, October 17. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago and is a make-up match from the one postponed back on September 10.
