Munster, Ind. – Helping lead a tough defensive effort with two saves and his second shutout of the year, senior goalkeeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) propelled the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a 3-0 road victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) late Saturday night at the Munster High School in Munster, Ind. Senior defender Dale Judickas (Hickory Hills, Ill./South Suburban CC/Stagg) used a goal off a hard shot from 20 yards deep in the game's sixth minute to give the Cougars some early offensive momentum. SXU has now won three of its last four games and improves to 3-6-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in conference play. PUC falls to 5-4-2 overall with the loss and 1-3-1 in CCAC action.
The game got off to a very late start (around 9:15 p.m.) due to the thunderstorms moving through the area Saturday night. After the Judickas goal early, Saint Xavier took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Less than eight minutes into the second half, freshman midfielder Kamil Szczesniak (Skomielna Biala, Poland/Reavis) gave the Cougars some extra cushion when he found the back of the net to put his team ahead, 2-0. Junior midfielder Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario/Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) put the game away in the 82nd minute when he hauled in a pass from sophomore forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph) and finished it off to complete the game's scoring.
Saint Xavier (3-6-0 overall/3-1-0 CCAC) begins a three-game home stand on Tuesday, October 8, with a match-up against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
