CHICAGO – Sophomore forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph) scored all four goals to lead the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a thrilling 4-3 victory over Judson University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Wednesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With the Cougars trailing 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of play, Gutierrez went on a tear scoring three unanswered goals over the course of the next 11 minutes to give SXU a 4-2 advantage. With the victory, Saint Xavier earns its second victory of the season improving to 2-6 overall and its second conference win with a 2-1 mark.
In the seventh minute of play, the Eagles got up on the scoreboard when junior forward Michael Berrequin connected on a short shot set up by a pass from freshman midfielder Tim Worzala. The Cougars tied the game in the 27th minute when Gutierrez punched through a header to get the ball past the JU keeper following a throw-in by senior defender Dale Judickas (Hickory Hills, Ill./South Suburban CC/Stagg). The game stayed tied, 1-1, through the rest of the half, but a long goal by Judson sophomore forward Walter Lopez off a free kick from 45 yards deep less than two minutes into the second half broke the tie.
Gutierrez took over the game starting in the 71st minute scoring the tying goal off a rebounded shot attempt from 10 yards out. Eight minutes later, he gave SXU the 3-2 lead off a short shot. In the 82nd minute, Gutierrez gave the Cougars some insurance with another goal in front of the net from 10 yards deep. The Eagles made it, 4-3, in the 87th minute on a goal by senior midfielder Santiago Munoz, but that completed the game's scoring. Saint Xavier finished with 15 total shots, including nine on goal. Senior Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the start in goal for SXU and finished the night with five saves.
