CHICAGO – Despite three of its players recording 12 or more kills in the match, the Saint Xavier University volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) in five sets Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago.  The Cougars won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-15.  However, after leading 17-11 in the third set, things started to fall apart for SXU and Roosevelt rallied for a 26-24 victory.  The Lakers took advantage of the momentum winning the next two sets, 27-25 and 15-9, to take the match.  The loss dropped the Cougars to 7-7 on the year and 2-2 in conference play.  Roosevelt moves to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the CCAC.

Junior middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) led the way with a career-high 14 kills for Saint Xavier to go along with four block assists.  Junior outside hitter Jessica Galotta (Beverly, Ill./Parkland CC/Mother McAuley) and sophomore middle blocker Heidi Gregerson (Park Ridge, Ill./UW-Parkside/Maine South) were also key to the Cougar offensive Tuesday recording 13 and 12 kills, respectively.  Galotta also posted 16 digs in the match, while Gregerson was tough at the net with six total blocks (four solos).  Junior setter Kelli Shaffer (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) notched new career-best single match marks of 39 assists and 21 digs.  Sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Sponsler (Jackson, Mich./Lumen Christi) also tallied nine kills for the Cougars, while junior libero Dominique Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./UIC/Mother McAuley) led the team with 27 digs.  Roosevelt got a monster match out of junior outside hitter Valerie Cutrone.  She posted 20 kills and 19 digs toward the winning effort.

Saint Xavier (7-7 overall/2-2 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., this weekend for the CCAC Crossover Tournament.  SXU kicks off play in the two-day event on Friday, October 4, with a 3 p.m. match against Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.).  It will be the first of four matches on the weekend for the Cougars.
